After two years of corona disputes, the social rifts sometimes seem insurmountable. But there are still people who shake hands even after the worst upheavals. A lateral thinking dropout and his observer, journalist Philipp Daum, report.
“There is no Corona.” – “And the intensive care patients in the hospitals?” – “It’s all fake.” Unfortunately, one hears such dialogues again and again, sometimes leading them oneself. Often with people who associate themselves with the lateral thinking scene, who, unaffected by facts and knowledge, doubt the existence of the corona virus – or beyond that: outrageous myths about the instrumentalization of the virus and its origin. How difficult it is to break away from such stories and the movement behind them is told by someone who has done it: “Harry”. His name has been changed to protect his identity, he has left the lateral thinking scene. The “Zeit Online” journalist Philipp Daum interviewed him and brought him to the podcast in episode 216 of “today important”. Daum says: “When you’re bombarded like that with [Verschwörungs-]videos, it’s like an addiction. Think of it as losing someone to an addiction.”
“Harry” is undergoing psychological treatment and says today that he would almost have taken up arms himself if it hadn’t been for people like his best friend “Dieter”. He did what both the journalist Philipp Daum and Harry himself advise people who are sitting desperately at kitchen tables and discussing against the myths: “His friend made a distinction: between the person and the friendship with Harry, and the movement in that his friend got in there,” explains Daum.
What’s left of the Olympics
They came, we saw, a few won: The Olympic Games in Beijing ended on Sunday. And they leave a very bitter aftertaste. A 15-year-old figure skater suspected of doping, the probably most polluting games of all time that claim the exact opposite of themselves and many harmless pictures of cheering Chinese:innen, produced by China’s communist propaganda machine. This is how journalist Pia Schrörs sums up the 2022 Winter Games. In the past few weeks she has reported on site about their background. And that’s how the former ski racer and winter sports expert Felix Neureuther sees it. There were great sporting moments, but the games took place in a place where winter sports are simply not at home.
