Cabinet decides to draft budget – Klingbeil defends high new debt

The federal budget for 2026 is: the government wants to spend more than 500 billion euros. Finance Minister Klingbeil justified his plans, especially with a view to the Bundeswehr.
The federal government launched the budget for 2026. According to government circles, the cabinet decided on the draft of Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD), which provides for expenses of 520.5 billion euros. That is 3.5 percent more than in the not yet decided budget for this year. New debts of a total of 174 billion euros are also planned for 2026. A good half of them run over the two special funds for infrastructure and for the Bundeswehr.
In the cabinet template, investments for growth, more employment and modernization of Germany are mentioned as the central priorities of the budget – as well as the strengthening of external and internal security. In the financial planning from 2027 to 2029, a gap of 172 billion euros gives.

Federal Minister of Finance Klingbeil said: “The top goal is to secure jobs and ensure new economic strength,” said the SPD politician after the decision. He emphasized relief for many people, among other things with a higher commuter flat rate and a continuation of the Germany ticket for buses and trains in local transport. The citizens should feel in everyday life that something improves.
The minister at the same time emphasized: “We deal responsibly with the money of the citizens.” With a view to the coming years, the government will take a strict consolidation course. To do this, an overall package must be put together, for which all ministries are responsible. “Everyone in the government will have to save.” At the same time, revenue should be strengthened by the seeds to miss less. The fight against tax fraud and financial crime is therefore a focus.
