Russia accuses Ukraine of shelling border posts

According to information from Russia, a Russian border post was “completely destroyed” by shelling from Ukraine. There were no victims.

Moscow has accused Kiev of destroying a Russian border post with shelling amid tensions in eastern Ukraine. On Monday morning, “a grenade of an unknown type fired from Ukrainian territory completely destroyed the post of border guards in the Rostov region,” reported Russian news agencies, citing the Russian FSB secret service, which is also responsible for border protection. So there were no victims. According to the agency, the border post is around 150 meters from the Russian-Ukrainian border. A video released by the Ria Nowosti news agency showed a small destroyed building on a wooded plain surrounded by rubble and rubble.

Shortly thereafter, the Ukrainian army declared that the information was not correct; they did not fire a grenade at the posts. “We cannot stop them from producing fake news – but we always emphasize that we are not shooting at civilian infrastructure or at any area in the Rostov region or whatever,” said Ukrainian military spokesman Pavlo Kovalchuk.

Security Council in Russia meets

In view of the fighting in eastern Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin has convened the National Security Council. The meeting should take place on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to the Interfax agency in Moscow. Peskow described the situation in the conflict area as “extremely tense”. “So far we haven’t seen any signs of relaxation.” International observers had recently spoken of a massive increase in violations of an existing ceasefire.

In the past few days, the situation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions had deteriorated. The Moscow-backed separatists reported several deaths. The Ukrainian army spoke of two soldiers killed on Saturday. The pro-Russian separatists in the self-proclaimed “people’s republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk, on the other hand, accuse Kiev of planning a major attack.

Western officials have been warning for days that Russia could create a pretext for an attack on Ukraine. The increasing fighting in eastern Ukraine could serve as such a pretext.

A massive deployment of around 150,000 Russian soldiers, according to Western figures, on the border with Ukraine has fueled fears for weeks that Russia could invade the neighboring country. Moscow denies any attack plans.

In the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, not far from the Russian border, government troops equipped by the West have been fighting Russian-backed separatists since 2014. According to United Nations estimates, more than 14,000 people have already been killed.
