Mothers stay at home much more often for sick child than fathers

Each parent can apply for up to 15 children’s hospital per child. According to the health insurance, the health insurance company usually takes care of women. It is not new.

When the child is sick, mothers in Germany remain much more often at home than fathers. In 2024, mothers submitted around 296,000 applications for child sickness benefit to the Barmer, but men only 109,000, as can be seen from data from the health insurance.

The number of applications was already unevenly distributed in previous years. In 2023, for example, according to Barmer, there were 297,000 applications from mothers and 108,000 of men. In 2021, women made 365,000 and men 139,000 applications.

“Unequal distribution of family care responsibility”

“The fact that women take advantage of child-suffering fees significantly more often than men reflects the continuing unequal distribution of family care responsibility,” said Barmer CEO Christoph Straub.

This can also be determined on the payment days. In 2024, the Barmer registered 877,000 pay days for child health benefit for its insured persons, of which 648,000 fell on women and 229,000 on men. In 2023, it was according to the information a total of 890,000 pay days, 663,000 of women and 227,000 of men. The Barmer is one of the largest health insurance companies in Germany and has around 8.3 million insured.

Each parent can apply for up to 15 days

Parents have had an extended entitlement to child health benefit since January 1, 2024. Since then, one parent can apply for 15 instead of ten days a year. Single parents are entitled to 30 days per child. Parents with more than two children can receive children’s health allowance for up to 35 days, single parents with more than two children for up to 70 days.

The child’s health benefit is usually 90 percent of the unusual net wage wage. Parents can apply for it from their health insurance – also parents in the home office. There are child -suffering fees for every legally insured child who is younger than 12 years old. For individual days, the child’s benefit can be taken flexibly – for example on two out of five days in a week.
