In 2024 there were so few Bafög recipients as in 25 years. In addition to students, pupils were also encouraged.

In 2024, more than 600,000 people in Germany received monthly BAföG services. As the Federal Statistical Office announced, it was 22,800 or 4 percent less than in the previous year with 612,800 funded. This dropped the number of people who received Bafög to the lowest level since 2000. In 2022 and 2023, the value had recently risen slightly.



On average, the funded 635 euros per month received less than in the previous year, in which there were still 640. The federal expenditure for BAföG funding also dropped compared to the previous year: by nine percent or 316 million euros to 3.1 billion euros.

More women than men among the funded


According to the statistics of the Federal Office, a large part of the people were students (483,800). 21 percent of the funded were students (129,000). Students received an average of 657 euros Bafög per month. For schoolchildren, the average monthly funding amount was 539 euros.




The amount of the individual funding amount depends, among other things, depends on the school attended, the accommodation (among parents or away) as well as the income of the funded and their parents.

According to the Federal Office, most of the funds were under 25 and did not live with their parents. In addition, women were more common than men with Bafög. Similar to previous years, the proportion of women among the subsidies was 59 percent larger than the proportion of men (41 percent).

Additional funding for the start of the course





At the start of the last winter semester 2024/2025, the “Study Start Aid” was also introduced as a new funding instrument in the BAföG. This is a one -off financial grant at the start of 1,000 euros.

The funding is aimed at people under the age of 25 who receive certain social benefits before the start of their studies and enroll for the first time for studying – the claim was largely based on reference to the citizens’ money. The promotion with the start of study takes place regardless of a possible monthly BAföG cover.

In 2024, according to the Federal Office, 10,700 people were promoted with a start -up aid. Accordingly, the federal government turned 10.7 million euros on it.
