For years, the unions have been struggling for more money for daycare teachers. Collective bargaining is expected to resume this week.
Before further collective bargaining for around 330,000 day care workers and other employees in the social and educational service, the civil servants’ association dbb calls for an upgrading of the occupational field.
This requires a joint effort, said dbb boss Ulrich Silberbach of the German Press Agency in Berlin. If this does not succeed, “all projects by the Scholz cabinet in this area are already waste, at the beginning of the legislative period,” said Silberbach.
This Friday, after a break of almost two years, the Verdi trade union and the dbb in Potsdam are resuming collective bargaining with the municipal employers for social and educational services. The talks were interrupted in March 2020 because of the pandemic. Verdi wanted to provide information on the status of the negotiations on Monday.
The federal government also “obliges”
Among other things, Verdi demands improvements in the classification of employees and a legal right to qualification. According to the Association of Municipal Employers’ Associations (VKA), the pure remuneration of the employees concerned is not the focus of the negotiations. As early as April 1, the fees will increase by 1.8 percent.
However, the unions demanded higher classifications, emphasized the VKA. According to the VKA, the total costs of the trade union demands cannot yet be fully quantified due to a lack of specifics. The items that have been calculable so far alone would add up to half a billion euros if the project were fully implemented.
Silberbach said: “We conduct the collective bargaining for the social and educational services with the municipal employers. But: The federal government also has a duty.” Ambitious plans for early childhood education and social work were formulated in the coalition agreement between the SPD, Greens and FDP. “If they are to become a reality, the federal government must give the municipalities more financial support.”
