Poland has been controlled by Germany since the beginning of July. That should stay that way until autumn. The government also publishes an interim balance.
As expected, Poland extends the temporary controls on the border with Germany. The checks, originally planned until August 5, would remain until October 4, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said on Sunday, according to the Pap.
The extension of the border controls on the German and Lithuanian border had already been decided on Friday, the minister added illegal migration on the sidelines of a meeting with representatives of regional authorities.
The European Commission’s issued ordinance had been presented for notification, said Kierwinski. The neighboring countries affected in the EU were also informed about the step. “Our European partners have a full understanding of this,” the news agency quoted the minister. “In September we will decide on the next steps based on the data from border protection, the military and the police.”
Dobrindt welcomes Polish border controls
At the request of the German Press Agency, a spokesman for the German Ministry of the Interior referred to earlier statements by Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt. The CSU politician had already welcomed the Polish controls at the beginning as a “important step in the joint procedure against illegal migration”.
The step is well founded, said Kierwinski. The “98 percent density” of the Polish borders already reached by the introduction of border controls in July led to illegal migrants as well as Belarusian and Russian secret services to other borders.
Poland had introduced the border controls on July 7 in response to German controls. Prime Minister Donald Tusk had made a possible end of this measure dependent on decisions by the federal government.
Citizens’ weirs in Poland exerted pressure
Germany has been checking randomly on the border with Poland since October 2023 to stop irregular migration. Federal Minister of the Interior Dobrindt had more intensive border controls shortly after the new Federal Government started in May. At the same time, he ordered that asylum seekers can also be rejected at the border in the future.
The government in Warsaw had followed the pressure in July under the pressure of legal -oriented vigilante. They looked for illegal migrants and tried to control state border protection. They assumed that Germany pushed refugees who were not previously in Poland.
In a recently published interim balance of the Interior Ministry in Warsaw, it was said that 243,683 people and 110,212 vehicles were checked at the border crossings from July 7th to July 30th. 105 people were denied entry to Poland. At the same time, the Polish page 72 took up people rejected by Germany, and in two other cases the admission was refused. Poland therefore rejected six migrants to Germany.
