Baltic states such as Lithuania and Poland repeatedly accuse Russia of having injured their airspace. Now Lithuania feels provoked again and wants to switch on NATO.
After the discovery of a Russian drone in Lithuania, the Baltic NATO member country requested help in the western military alliance in air defense. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said on Tuesday that he and Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene had asked NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte in a letter for “immediate measures to improve air defense skills in Lithuania”. The Russian drone found last week in the Baltic State was stated with explosives.
“She was wearing an explosive device that was successfully defused by special forces of the Lithuanian army on site,” said Lithuanian general Prosecutor Nida Grunskien in front of journalists on Tuesday. According to the information, the Russian military drone had flown from the neighboring country of Belarus to Lithuania and equipped with around two kilograms of explosives. It was found on a military training area near the city of Rukla last Friday.
“One of the main theories in the investigation is that the unmanned aircraft has accidentally entered Lithuanian area,” said the Attorney General. However, she wanted to “emphasize that other theories are persecuted in parallel”.
Baltic states accuse Russia of injuries to their airspace
According to the Lithuanian military, it was the same drone that had flown over the capital Vilnius on Monday last week. The Lithuanian military said that the drone of the Gerbera Type Gerbera is also used in the war against Ukraine to confuse and overwhelm the Ukrainian air defense.
“This is the second such incident within one month,” said Lithuania of Study Minister Budry. “The danger is real and it grows,” he added. “If Belarus does not take any measures to minimize potential damage on our site, Lithuania will react with political and other measures,” he said in the direction of Belarus, a close ally by Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin.
Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, the Baltic States and Poland have repeatedly reported injuries to their airspace by Russian drones.
