With the reintroduction of the border controls, Interior Minister Dobrindt wanted to ensure law and order. Time for an interim balance.
“Law and Order” wanted to create Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) with tightened controls at the German borders. At the beginning of his term in May, he ordered them until further notice and called out a turn in German migration policy. As a result, Poland reacted with its own border controls – and critics warned of overloading the federal police. That was three months ago. How is the situation today?
Have there been more rejections since the reintroduction of the border controls?
Not when looking at the numbers. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, a total of 9254 people were rejected at the borders between May 8 and 31 – that is around 770. This is the case when refugees have already entered German soil and have to leave the country again.
At 770 a week, the number of rejections moves around the level of the first four months of 2025 and the fourth quarter of 2024. However, Dobrindt regularly refers to the long -term effect of border controls. The CSU minister argues that these led to fewer refugees on their way to Germany.
Where were the most rejections?
On the border with France, where a total of 2038 rejections were registered between May 8 and July 31. There were also four -digit numbers of rejections at the borders to Poland (1816), Switzerland (1760) and Austria (1623). This is followed by the Netherlands (706), Czech Republic (576), Luxembourg (208), Belgium (413) and Denmark (114). In May and June, most of the rejected came from Afghanistan, followed by Algeria, Eritrea and Somalia. There was no breakdown according to countries of origin for July.
The police union warned of overloading the federal police. How does she see that now?
“Furthermore, the burden of the federal police is very high due to the increased internal border controls,” said the GdP chairwoman Andreas Roßkopf AFP responsible for the federal police. Office had still partially changed their roster and “gave a large extent to training and further education,” added Roßkopf. “Exceptions to reduce overtime are also given only restrictively.”
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the number of forces used daily on the borders was increased at the beginning of the tightened controls from 11,000 to 14,000. This is almost a third of the entire staff of the federal police. The Federal Government always emphasized that the measure should not be maintained in the long run.
Is the staff of airports and train stations missing now?
Critics feared that. Because of the summer travel wave, there is a lot of operation-with a lot of work for the police. The Ministry of the Interior keeps the power of airports and train stations “for tactical reasons”. According to the GdP, the line -up is “almost identical” compared to last year. “But of course the support forces from the riot police and the mobile units are missing here,” said Roßkopf.
“Especially with a view to the football leagues that are now beginning, with the high arrival and departure of football fans in the railway area, these support forces are urgently needed here,” warned the union. For some years now, a good 4,000 forces have been missing at the more than 5,700 train stations and stops.
A district on the border tells: How to deal with the many immigrants?
“My son is afraid of the police”
“My husband, our three children and I have been sharing a room in this accommodation for 17 months. Eight families live in our house, men live next to each other in one room. Everyone shows great respect. Our problem is that our youngest was born in June with a severe heart defect. Bahoz was operated for nine hours in the university clinic in Freiburg and we were well thanked. The doctor has to be checked. If my elderly, he is afraid, I am well-known in kind. The crimes should be sent back.

According to Roßkopf’s forecast, cast gaps are subsequently possible. “In our view, this is quite questionable in the increasing crime at the train stations and the increasing willingness to violence among traveling football fans,” said Roßkopf. The Ministry of the Interior, on the other hand, gives the all -clear: “It is ensured that the federal police fulfill their legally assigned tasks.”
How do the border controls affect overtime?
It is difficult to say. According to the ministry, the federal police accumulated 2.9 million overtime until June 30th. This number is likely to have risen at the limits due to the additional burden. The civil servants have been pushing the majority of the overtime in front of them for years: on March 31, 2025, the number had already been 2.4 million. There is no breakdown on the occasion of the overtime – including those who have been in May 8.
