If Russia attacks NATO militarily, Germany would also be the goal. Political scientist Christian Mölling is convinced of this. A weak point is worried.
If there is a Russian military attack on NATO, Germany would also be a very likely goal. Political scientist Christian Mölling is convinced of this. He rules out that Germany is being attacked by Russia alone, said Mölling, Senior Advisor at the Brussels Thinktank European Policy Center, in the current episode of the star– s “Die Lage -International”. But: “The fact that Germany is a goal in the event of a Russian attack is obvious. Because we are the turntable, the logistical backbone of NATO.”
For Russia, Germany is a “neuralgic point”
Mölling continues: “Much of what is used at the front has to go through or from the front through or from the front. That is why Germany is already a neuralgic point.” The Bundeswehr assumes around 800,000 soldiers and 200,000 vehicles, which in the event of a Russian attack on the NATO-East flank in the Baltic States would have to be shifted there within a very short time. The first or second care of wounded would also take place in Germany.
This emerges from a 1000-page plan (“Operation Plan Germany”), which the Bundeswehr developed and the “Spiegel” was the first to report last year. Little is known about him because he is classified as a secret clad.
According to Mölling, Germany is still not optimal for an attack. However, this is less due to military planning: “A civil counterpart is needed, even for legitimacy. The Bundeswehr itself says that it is not responsible for overall defense in Germany.” The Ministry of the Interior, like the Ministry of Defense, actually has to develop a plan for the situation of an attack on Germany. So far, however, this has not yet happened.
Bundestag and government have not yet “warmed up”
Mölling is less concerned about social resilience, but another point: “Bundestag and government are not yet up to date that they are warming.” They have not yet developed scenarios how they could react if there was actually a specific attack on government institutions, for example to the Bundestag.
