US President Trump wants to talk to Putin about an end to the war of aggression – Selenskyj should be left out first. This wants more European influence in the US negotiations.
Before his first personal meeting with Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump initially sees no need for a meeting of the Kremlin chief with the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. On a question of journalists as to whether Putin first had to meet Selenskyj, Trump said: “No.” Meanwhile, Selenskyj is pushing a stronger influence of Europeans during the current US negotiations with Russia over the end of the war.
Meeting by Trump and Putin planned
Trump and Putin are expected to meet Ukraine for the first time in person for the first time about the termination of the Russian attack war. Both sides said the time was ripe for such a summit. Day and place have not yet been determined. Selenskyj would be consulted in a later phase for the conversations. In spring, Kyiv had insisted that they were directly involved in all talks.
The US President opened openly how he deals with his self-set ultimatum to Putin to sanctions against Russia’s trading partner. The 10-day period has been running since July 29. A ceasefire between Russia and the Ukraine attacked by Moscow is to be reached by the end. Otherwise Trump wants to impose punishments against Russia’s trading partners – he has already announced additional tariffs against India.
Trump: It is entirely with Putin
When asked whether the deadline is still standing, Trump said about Putin: “We will see what he has to say. It’s entirely with him.”
Russia has been a destructive war against Ukraine for more than three years. Trump had repeatedly explained to want to end the war quickly. It would be the first personal meeting of a reigning US president with Putin since the summer of 2021. At that time, Trump’s democratic predecessor Joe Biden met the Kremlin chief in Geneva.
Selenskyj: War and his termination concern all of Europe
Ukraine’s President Selenskyj, however, believed a greater European influence in negotiations than necessary. “All decisions to be made to end this war and guarantee security actually affect the entire Europe and not just one,” said the head of state in his evening video message. This is a war of Russia not only against Ukraine, but “in Europe and against Europe,” said Selenskyj.
Therefore, according to Selenskyj Meeting at European level, the positions are planned for coordination. “The voice of Europe has to influence the processes,” said the head of state. He is also planning a telephone conversation with Italy’s head of telephone with Italy’s head of telephone with Italy’s head of telephone with Italy’s government after phone calls to Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission Head of the EU. The representatives of other European countries have so far only been informed of the plans from Washington.
Again drone attacks on Ukraine
Russia, meanwhile, attacked Ukraine again with drones in the evening. The news agency RBK Ukraine reported, citing authorities, an attack on the city of Charkiw in the east of the country in the late evening. Explosions had to be heard that a fire broke out in a company, according to the report, Mayor Ihor Terechow said. Injured were initially not reported.
