The UN Security Council comes on Sunday to a session about the plans Israel to take control in the city of Gaza.
On Sunday, the UN Security Council advises on Israel’s plans to take control in the city of Gaza. The rare weekend meeting is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. (CEST), as AFP learned from diplomatic circles on Saturday. Several of the 15 member states of the Security Council had therefore applied for the call. Before that it was said that the meeting was held on Saturday at 9 p.m. (CEST).
Plans for Gaza in the focus of the UN Security Council
UN General Secretary António Guterres, meanwhile, criticized the Israeli government’s plans. Guterres was “deeply alarmed,” said a spokesman and added: “This decision means a dangerous escalation and harbors the risk that the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians still exacerbate.”
The Israeli security cabinet had approved a plan on Friday night, which provides for the capture of the city of Gaza through the Israeli army. The declared goal is the military victory over the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas. According to the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it is also planned that humanitarian aid is delivered to the civilian population outside the battle areas.
