How do Russia and the United States imagine the end of the war in Ukraine? A few days before a summit, details seep through and they don’t look good for Kiev.

US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin seem to be assuming that Ukraine’s major area ability to deal with the war for an end to the war – Kiev strictly rejects this. “The Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” said President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in a video message in Kiev. “The answer to the territorial questions of Ukraine is in the constitution of Ukraine. Nobody will deviate, and nobody can deviate.”

According to US media reports, Putin asked Trump in front of a summit that Russia will receive full control over the eastern Ukrainian areas of Donetsk and Luhansk. This would mean the disclosure of several thousand square kilometers and strategically important cities through the Ukrainian army.

Reports: Moscow wants Donetsk and Luhansk entirely

According to a report by the newspaper “Wall Street Journal”, Putin made this proposal to visit US negotiators Steve Witkoff on Wednesday in Moscow. On Friday, the White House and the Kremlin confirmed that Trump’s summit with Putin should take place on August 15th in the northern US state of Alaska.

Russia has already occupied parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk areas in the Donbass coal and industrial area in 2014 and renamed them in folk republics. Shortly before the invasion on February 24, 2022, Moscow recognized the structure as independent and declared it to Russian territory in autumn 2022.

In Luhansk, the Ukrainian defenders only hold a few square kilometers. But in the Donetsk area, which is competitive, the Ukrainian army still controls a quarter of the area. The Russian army gradually moves, but with losses. A clearance would mean that the Ukraine would have to give up the chain of well -paved cities of Slowjansk, Kramatorsk and Kostjantyniwka and would then be more defenseless.

Trump speaks of the exchange of territory

In Washington, Trump vaguely spoke of an exchange of areas that were previously held either by Russian or Ukrainian troops, “to be both sides”. He did not give details. “We look at territory that has been competitive for three and a half years.” It should also be returned a little.

These could be small bridgeheads of the Russian army in the Ukrainian front areas Sumy and Charkiw. Russian soldiers also seem to have exceeded the border to the Dnipropetrovsk area. Ukraine claims that the rest of an offensive of 2024 still have soldiers in the Russian area of Kursk.

According to DPA information, Trump also informed the European partner countries about possible exchange transactions after the Witkoff visit. According to the media reports, it is unclear what the Russian consideration could be beyond a pure cessation of the fights. The question of security guarantees for Ukraine is also open.

What will become of Saporischschja and Cherson?

The fate of the South Ukrainian areas of Saporischschja and Cherson remains unclear. Russia also annexed it, but only partially masters them. The wide electricity dnipro separates both sides. Due to the conquest in the south, Russia has created a country bridge to the crimed peninsula in 2014.

Selenskyj criticized Alaska, chosen by Trump and Putin. “Very far away from this war, which rages in our country, against our people, and which cannot be ended without us anyway, without the Ukraine,” he said. Just like the European countries, Ukraine fears that they are left out as the main affected in the decisions of the great nuclear powers.

At the first mentions of a summit, the White House had spoken of the fact that a three -way meeting with Putin should follow a three -way meeting with Selenskyj. Moscow, on the other hand, invites Trump to the second meeting in Russia – so Selenskyj is unloaded again.

Trump sees obstacles at Selenskyj

Trump wants to reach an end of the war. Since taking office in January, however, he has not put pressure on Russia as an attacker, but on the attacked Ukraine. Trump’s ultimatum to Putin to hire the war passed on Friday and dissolved in preparations for the summit.

During a appearance in the White House with the President of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Trump interpreted the hurdles of the Ukrainian constitution as an obstacle to a solution. Selenskyj has to hurry to organize political approval in his country “because we are about to deal”. The Ukrainian president should get everything he needs, “because he has to prepare to sign something”.

The Ukrainian population is tired of war after three and a half years under non -stop Russian attacks. However, an assignment of areas would cause severe domestic upheavals.
