Several regions are affected in the center of the country, including the capital Port-Au-Prince. The emergency should make the fight against the gangs more effective.
In view of the extent of gang crime in Haiti, the government of the Caribbean crisis state has proclaimed a three -month state of emergency. The measure applies to the central regions of Ouest, in which the capital Port-Au-Prince, as well as Artibonite and Center, said in the official message. A new head of the national police was also appointed.
“The uncertainty has a negative impact on both the life of the citizens and the various economic areas of the country,” said Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as a reason. The decision should enable comprehensive mobilization of the state’s resources in order to restore security and peace.
No elections have been taking place since 2016
The state of emergency is imposed shortly after the new rotating president of the transitional council, the businessman Laurent Saint-Cyr. Since June 2024, the nine -member council has been conducting government transactions together with a prime minister with the aim of stabilizing the country and paving the way to democratic elections in November. However, the security situation has continued to deteriorate.
Haiti is the poorest country in the American continent. With almost twelve million inhabitants, no elections have taken place in the Caribbean Republic. The then President Jovenel Moïse was murdered in his residence in 2021. Violent gangs control at least 80 percent of the capital and other parts of the country.
