Donald Trump says that homeless violence and crime are stir up in the US capital. That is why people should go away. Washington Mayor sees it differently.
US President Donald Trump wants to drive homeless people from the capital Washington and detain criminals, but encounters the mayor of the city with his plans. “The homeless people have to move away immediately,” Trump wrote on Sunday on his Truth Social platform. “We will give you accommodations, but far away from the capital. The criminals do not have to move away. We will put you in prison where you belong.”
According to a US representative, the government is preparing to send hundreds of members of the National Guard to implement the plans. However, a final decision has not yet been made, said the government official of the Reuters news agency.
The Organization Community Partnership, which is committed to combating homelessness in Washington DC, told the Reuters news agency that around 3,782 people were homeless every night in the over 700,000 inhabitants. Most of them were in emergency accommodation, about 800 would spend the night on the streets.
Washington Mayor rejects Trump’s allegations
The Mayor of Washington, the democrat Muriel Bowser, rejected the presentation of the US President. “We do not experience a climate in the capital,” said Bowser on Sunday to the broadcaster MSNBC. According to the data of the urban police, violent crime in the first seven months of 2025 fell by 26 percent compared to the previous year, overall crime decreased by seven percent. It was true that there was a bad increase in crime in 2023, said Bowser. “But we no longer have 2023.”
The background of the plans is apparently a violent attack on a young government employee who had annoyed the president. A representative of the White House said that 450 officials from federal authorities were already in action in the city.
Unlike in the US states, in which the governor decides on the use of the National Guard, the group in the capital Washington is directly subject to the president. Trump had already used the National Guard on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 in the city after the storm of his followers. The White House did not comment on which legal basis Trump wants to show people from Washington.
