Merz explains reasons for arms decision

Chancellor Merz’s announcement that it no longer delivered certain armaments to Israel has caused a stir since Friday. Also in the CDU. Merz explains his motives to the federal board.

The stop of arms exports to Israel, partly announced by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), may have only minor effects in practice. In a six-point paper for the CDU federal board, Merz points out that weapons and ammunition that are used in the Gaza Strip have not been delivered to Israel. “The decision about further armaments is expressly limited to a possible use in Gaza; it places the current circumstances there,” it continues.

The paper is available to the German Press Agency in Berlin. First the “Bild” newspaper reported about it. It continues: “There are areas of application that does not cover this wording. This applies, for example, to armaments of the air and sea defense, which are central to the self-defense of Israel.”

Merz: Decision to siege the city of Gaza is very worried

In the letter, Merz explains the fundamental attitude of the government to Israel, its position on the Gaza War and its motives for the announcement from last Friday that for the time being there are no exports of armaments “that can be used in the Gaza Strip”. The reason was the decision of the Israeli security cabinet of August 7 to extend the military offensive in the Gaza Strip considerably and to initiate a siege of the city of Gaza, Merz writes.

“The federal government is very concerned with this decision.” It contains considerable risks for the security of the hostages still held by the Hamas and threatens to further tighten the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. It is questionable whether an expansion of military operations would increase the chances of an armistice.

Chancellor warns of tightening conflicts in Germany

“This escalation also contributes to the tightening of social conflicts in Germany and Europe, which we also have to avoid in the sense of our obligation to the state of Israel,” the letter continues.
