The tone towards Israel becomes rougher: New Zealand head of government finds the attacks on Gaza “unacceptable” and addresses his criticism directly on Netanyahu. What follows?
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon criticized the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with unusually sharp words and described the recent attacks in the Gaza Strip as “completely unacceptable”. “I think he lost the mind,” Luxon said to journalists. Israel has repeatedly ignored the global community appeals for unhindered humanitarian access and thus risking further disasters.
New Zealand is very far away and hardly has any trade relationships with Israel. But the Pacific state stands for clear values and always appeals to them very clearly. Luxon emphasized that “forced displacement of people” and an “annexation of gaza” would be a break in international law.
Will New Zealand also recognize a state of Palestine?
Netanyahu had recently announced that in addition to taking the city of Gaza, Israel’s new war plan also provides for the destruction of Hamas in the central refugee camps of the Gaza Strip. “Our goal is not to fill Gaza. Our goal is to free Gaza-from the Hamas terrorists,” he said. According to aid organizations, a famine threatens in the Gaza Strip.
The government in Wellington is considering joining countries such as France, Canada and Australia and officially recognizing a state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September. Luxon warned that the latest developments could destroy the way to a two-state solution.
