Europe and Ukraine coordinated in front of the American-Russian summit, President Selenskyj came to Berlin. But will US President Trump take into account her demands in the end?
Watch and hope the day before the American-Russian summit: The European countries and representatives of Kiev are not at the table when US President Donald Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin talk about the Ukraine War in Alaska on Friday. But they gave Trump on the way what their point of view should be the message to Putin. The US President threatened Putin in advance with “very serious consequences” if Russia’s head of state should not get involved in an end to the war he ordered.
“The way to peace cannot be set without Ukraine, and negotiations can only bring a result if they take place during a ceasefire,” said Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. In this, the supporters of Ukraine agree in the so -called coalition of the willing, he wrote on the platform X.
With Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), Selenskyj from Berlin took part in a video count of this alliance with around 20 countries such as Great Britain, France, Italy, Poland, Australia and Japan. A switching of leading EU and NATO countries and the EU leaders as well as a collective phone call with Trump had preceded.
Merz: Europe’s security interest must be preserved
“In Alaska, basic European and Ukrainian security interests must remain preserved,” said Merz when he appeared with Selenskyj in the Chancellery. With a view of the summit in the northernmost US state, he spoke of “Hope for Movement” and “Hope for Peace in Ukraine”.
The British Prime Minister Keir Strandmer also wants to recognize a “realistic chance” on a ceasefire in the war that Russia had started with its attack on the neighboring country almost three and a half years ago. Trump did the preparatory work for such a break, said Straßer, according to the British news agency PA. His credo: “We have to combine active diplomacy on the one hand with military support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia.”
Europeans are calling for ceasefire before negotiations
The Europeans and Ukrainians, especially Selenskyj, are excluded from the summit consultations. They fear that Trump and Putin could communicate with Russia on the area from Ukraine, which Kiev strictly rejects.
One of the demands from Europe that Merz listed is that Ukraine has to sit at the table at a follow -up meeting. There must be a ceasefire before negotiations. When talking about territorial questions, the current front course must be the starting point. A recognition of Russian conquests for international law is excluded. In addition, Ukraine needs security guarantees and also has to keep a strong army.
Trump threatens consequences – and is silent about details
Trump, who pushed a lot on a meeting with Putin, threatened the Kremlin boss with serious consequences if he was still to refuse to end at the end of the war. The US president did not enter into a question of whether he thinks of the consequences of tariffs. Trump’s statements about Putin have been fluctuating in the past few months – sometimes he called the Kremlin boss trustworthy, then he criticized him again. So far, however, the US President has not taken the consequence of really increasing the pressure on Putin.
Trump again promised a meeting between Selenskyj and Putin. If the two wished this, he could also take part in it himself. However, he initially wanted to wait and see how his summit with Putin is – because also another meeting could not occur.
At the summit in Alaska, Trump first wants to clarify the framework conditions. At the same time, he admitted that he was probably unable to prevent Putin from further attacks on Ukraine.
Russian fight drones over Ukraine
On Wednesday evening, air alarm prevailed over the eastern parts of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force located Russian drones in the sky. In addition, Ukrainian warning apps of rocket attacks to the Tschernihiw area north of Kiev reported. Russia seems to have reduced his nightly attacks since the meeting with Trump has been in the room.
On the Russian side, Wolgograd Airport hired the operation for security reasons around midnight, as the state news agency TASS reported – a sign that Ukrainian drones were located in the area.
The USA exposes sanctions against Russians for peaks
The summit between Trump and Putin will take place on Friday at the US Air Force base in Elmendorf-Richardson-immediately at the gates of Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. Via the Far East of his giant country, Putin can fly directly into the remote region, Russia and the United States are only separated there by Beringstrasse. Alaska belonged to Russia until the 19th century, then the area was sold from the Tsarist Empire to the USA.
The US government exposes some Russia sanctions especially for the summit by August 20, as the Ministry of Finance in Washington announced. In recent years, the United States has proven many authorities and companies from Russia with sanctions. If they had remained in force, this would have made it difficult for those affected to travel to Alaska.
Because of the time shift, the meeting between Trump and Putin in Europe falls into the late hours of Friday. The federal government expects Trump to teach both Selenskyj and the most important European partners on Friday evening or Saturday morning.
