Bolsonaro rejects coup allegations and calls for acquittal

Bolsonaro The leader of a failed coup attempt? Brazil’s ex-President defends himself against the allegations before the fruit. A decision should soon be made.
In the trial of a attempted coup d’état, Brazil’s ex-President Jair Bolsonaro would like to reach an acquittal before the Supreme Court. The allegations are “the result of conclusions and distorted interpretations of the related actions and statements”, the news portal “G1” quoted from the almost 200 -page final plea of the defense.
Bolsonaro is on trial because after his election defeat in 2022 he is said to have planned a coup attempt against the government of his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The Attorney General sees him as the main actor “of the most serious actions for the destruction of the democratic legal system” in Brazil.
Bolsonaro defends itself against allegations
The lawyers of the right ex-president rejected the accusations. Bolsonaro has “never joined an alleged conspiracy” and there is “no evidence” for a connection to the plans or to the riots. He had “always defended democracy and the rule of law” and never tried to prevent Lula from taking office. Bolsonaro also accused the press a “medial massacre” and prejudice.
According to the final plea already submitted, the Prosecutor’s Prosecutor’s Office and the following the defense are the procedure in his last phase. A decision on the conviction or acquittal of Bolsonaro and co -accused will be expected in the coming weeks. The 70-year-old is currently under house arrest-arranged by federal judge Alexandre de Moraes for alleged violations of requirements.
