Border controls cost 80.5 million euros

Since September 2024, the federal police have been checking at all German land borders. That costs millions. The remuneration of overtime is particularly expensive.

Germany spent a total of 80.5 million euros from the introduction in mid -September 2024 to the end of June this year for the controls at the land borders. This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a written question of left-wing MPs Clara Bünger, about which the Funke media group first reported. It is also available to the German Press Agency.

The costs for the use of the federal police were between 24 and 29.1 million euros per quarter.

37.9 million euros alone for overtime

From April to the end of June of this year, according to the Interior Ministry, the federal government paid eight million euros for the catering of the officials and the accommodation in hotels, almost three million cost “service at unfavorable times” during this time. 2.6 million euros were consumed for “leadership and resources” and almost two million euros flowed into the operation of the border stations.

The biggest item is therefore the “all -off remuneration”, ie the payment of overtime. From mid -September 2024 to the end of June 2025, 37.9 million euros were covered by additional operations.

Border controls since September 2024

The then Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) introduced the controls at the German land borders in September last year – as a temporary exception. However, they have been extended several times since then. Border controls are actually not intended in the Schengen area. The introduction with the containment of irregular migration and the protection against Islamist terrorists and cross -border crime was justified.

Faeser’s successor Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) tightened the controls shortly after the Black-Red Federal Government took office on May 8. He announced another extension last week. There should be controls and rejections beyond September.

Left faction speaks of illegal politics

According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, federal police officers rejected a total of 493 people at German national borders from May 8 to August 4, although they had put an asylum application.

The interior expert of the left faction, Clara Bünger, called the Federal Government’s approach to “illegal limited limits”. This complicates asylum seekers, leading to traffic chaos in the border regions, polluted border commuters and causing enormous costs, Bünger told the newspapers of the Funke media group. She called for an immediate end of border controls.

CSU: Cost “absolutely justified”

CSU state group leader Alexander Hoffmann defended the effort for the controls and thanked the federal police officers. “The costs for the border controls are absolutely justified,” said Hoffmann of the German Press Agency. “We will continue these border controls and the rejections at the borders until the European asylum system and external boundary protection work,” said the CSU politician. Critics of the measures only show that they did not want to “turn a migration” and deliberately ignore the population’s will.
