The Alaska summit of Trump and Putin is unpredictable for Europe despite all the effort. According to the Politologist Mölling, a result for Ukraine would be fatal.
Before the meeting between US President Donald Trump and the Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, the political scientist Christian Mölling warned of too much optimism on Friday.
“We do not know what trigger points Putin used in the past talks to convince him of his point of view,” said Mölling, Senior Advisor at the Brussels Thinktank “European Policy Center”, in star– “The Location -International”. “It’s really a dangerous situation.”
In the past, Trump has proven that he could change his opinion without any connection: “This remains the risk that floats not only above this meeting, but also above further development.”
This result would be fatal
“The most dangerous result would be if Trump goes back to the old lyre that Selenskyj is basically not ready to negotiate and that the Russians are willing to give everything,” said Mölling. This could lead to the American government in question for Ukraine’s help or Trump Putin’s demand for Ukrainian regional abortion.
“The Russian line is very clear: the Ukrainians have to give up first and then we think about whether we come to a ceasefire or fully attack them. Ukraine cannot agree,” said Mölling. “How Trump deals with this mixture is the crucial question.”
Merz cut a good figure in front of Alaska summit
The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz cut a good figure in advance. He has “obviously the ear of the American president” and “on the other hand, obviously the trust of the Ukrainian president and many other Europeans”.
“This does not change the fact that the Europeans will not be there and the Ukrainians will not,” said Mölling. In Europe, there should therefore be no illusions. “The idea that you are sitting virtually at the table” is wrong.
