The United States and Russia put their positions before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s summit. The previous day, Kremlin chief Putin promised new armaments control contracts in Alaska – if the Ukraine conflict succeeded in solving. US President Trump had previously threatened “very serious consequences” for Moscow if Putin did not want to end the fighting in Ukraine after the meeting. His spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt also spoke of a “highly complex and brutal war” that Trump had inherited.

At the summit in Alaska on Friday, Trump first wants to clarify the framework conditions. At the same time, he admitted that he was probably unable to prevent Putin from further attacks on Ukraine. He strives for a quick further meeting, in which the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj should also be there. However, Trump restricted that such a meeting could only exist if the first encounter went well. The summit is only to begin on Friday late in the late evening in Central European time (around 9:30 p.m.).

USA see Russian economy on shaky feet

The US website “Axios” reported citing US government officials, Trump wanted to achieve a ceasefire at the meeting with Putin-and could increase the pressure on the Kremlin. Washington believes that the Russian economy can quickly force it to its knees if necessary – “tomorrow”. Only a few steps are necessary for this, mainly from the US Ministry of finance, it said. Leavitt said Trump has many means of pressure, but initially rely on diplomacy.

Meanwhile, Putin praised the US government. She undertakes “quite energetic and sincere efforts” in order to end the battles in Ukraine and to come to agreements that are in the interest of all pages involved. This can also create long -term conditions for peace in Europe and the world as a whole, “if we pass on agreements in the area of control of strategic offensive weapons in the next phases,” said the Kremlin chief.

Nuclear weapons treaty as a moscow lure

Strategic offensive weapons mean intercontinental nuclear weapons. The area of nuclear armor is almost no longer regulated between Russia and the USA because contracts have expired or have been canceled.

Putin’s foreign policy advisor Juri Uschakow said that the summit would mainly be about the Ukraine conflict. However, other questions should also be discussed.

USA could participate in security guarantees

Selenskyj emphasized: “The way to peace cannot be set without Ukraine, and negotiations can only bring a result if they take place during a ceasefire.” In this, the supporters of Ukraine agree in the so -called coalition of the willing.

In a switching between Selenskyj, the European ally and Trump, the US President was ready to ensure that the United States is involved in security guarantees for Ukraine outside of NATO. Before that, it was often said from Washington that that was the responsibility of the Europeans. Trump therefore sees a stronger pressure in tariffs than in sanctions. The United States recently imposed an additional 25 percent import customs from India to dissuade the country from the purchase of Russian oil. Energy exports are a central source of money from the Russian state.

Europeans are calling for ceasefire before negotiations

The Europeans and Ukrainians, especially Selenskyj, are excluded from the summit consultations. They fear that Trump and Putin could communicate with Russia on the area from Ukraine, which Kiev strictly rejects.

One of the demands from Europe that Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) listed is that Ukraine has to sit at the table at a follow -up meeting. There must be a ceasefire before negotiations. When talking about territorial questions, the current front course must be the starting point. A recognition of Russian conquests for international law is excluded. In addition, Ukraine needs security guarantees and also has to keep a strong army.

Trump had said several times that an “area exchange” between Ukraine and Russia should be necessary for a solution. According to previous information, Russia wants to have the Ukrainian areas of Donetsk and Luhansk, which are largely occupied – and could potentially be ready to withdraw from other occupied areas.
