In Istanbul, the police again arrest dozens of people from the environment of the opposition city administration. Among them is another district mayor of the CHP.
In the course of the latest corruption proceedings, the Turkish authorities arrested dozens of other members of the oppositional city administration on Friday. According to party members and local media, a district mayor of the CHP was again the largest opposition party in the country.
Among the 44 arrested, the district mayor of Beyoglu, Inan Güney, a consultant of the detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, as well as urban employees, reported the daily “Cumhuriyet”. The suspects are therefore accused of bribery, fraud and illegal procurement of personal data.
The CHP condemned the arrests as a politically motivated attempt to silence dissenters. “This is not a law, but a political operation on the instruction of the government,” wrote CHP MP Burhanettin Bulut on the X.
Imamoglu, a potential challenger of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was arrested in March and removed from his office. This triggered nationwide protests. The CHP still organizes rallies today. Since Erdogan lost control of the metropolis of Istanbul in the 2019 elections, Imamoglu has been exposed to several investigative and legal proceedings.
