In the United States, Trump welcomes Kremlin chief Putin, who has been a war against Ukraine for years. The Germans have a clear opinion on Trump’s commitment – and the question of who has negotiation power.
According to a current survey, a majority of Germans doubt that US President Donald Trump will clearly work for Ukraine at his meeting with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. In a survey of the opinion research institute Civey for the news channel World TV, 63 percent expressed corresponding skepticism. Only 14 percent of the respondents stated that the Republican would strongly campaign for the country attacked by Russia. 23 percent were drawn about Trump’s intentions. According to the information, the survey is representative.
A majority of the Germans (55 percent) also indicated that in their view, the negotiation power lies clearly or rather with the Russian president. Only 15 percent of those surveyed attributed Trump to the greater negotiation power. 30 percent did not decide on the question.
Meeting in the evening in Alaska
Trump and Putin come together in Northern Alaska in Northern European times in the late evening. Trump wants to talk about a ceasefire in Ukraine and an end of the war at the summit. Putin has so far not revealed any steering.
In fact, without the consent of Ukraine, the US President cannot make any binding commitments. The United States can neither dictate the Ukrainian army a ceasefire nor a withdrawal from its own areas, especially since a territorial waiver would require a change in the Ukrainian constitution. However, Trump has significant pressure products: In addition to arms deliveries, he could also stop the provision of satellite data or intelligence information from the USA, which are hard to replace for Ukraine in the war.
