Washington’s Attorney General accuses the government around Donald Trump to cross its constitutional powers and to undermine the autonomy of the capital.
Washington’s Attorney General has sued the government of US President Donald Trump for taking over the control over the police of the US capital. Attorney General Brian Schwalb spoke on Friday of an “enemy takeover” of the capital police that violated the law. The approach of the Trump government “goes far beyond the president’s limited authority”.
In the lawsuit submitted to a federal court, Schwalb writes that the law on the government of the capital district District of Columbia (DC) does not allow this “brazen takeover of the authority of the district about its own government”. The Attorney General demands that the order of US Justice Minister Pam Bondi, who puts the police from Washington under the control of the federal government, will be immediately overridden.
Donald Trump: Crime in Washington supposedly out of control
Trump had the Washington police under the control of his government on Monday and sent the national guard to the capital. The right-wing populist president justified this with the fight against the high crime in Washington, according to his words-although the crime rates have decreased significantly after an increase during the corona pandemic. On Thursday evening, Minister of Justice Bondi temporarily made the head of the anti-drug police DEA, Terry Cole, the “emergency police chief” of Washington.
The US capital is a stronghold of the Democratic Party. Trump repeatedly claims that in Washington and in other cities ruled by the Democrats, crime is out of control. On the other hand, critics accuse the Republican right -wing populist sharpening – and an attempt to expand his power.
