Denmark’s head of government Frederiksen describes Netanyahu as a “problem”

Like other heads of government, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen finds sharp words for Benjamin Netanyahu. It puts sanctions against Israel into conversation.

The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has described and announced the Israeli head of government Benjamin Netanyahu as a “problem” of wanting to increase the pressure on Israel in the Gaza Strip because of the war. “Netanyahu is now a problem itself,” emphasized Frederiksen in an interview published on Saturday with the newspaper “Jyllands Post”.

The Israeli government is “too far,” added the head of government from the center-right camp, whose country had taken over the semi-annual EU Council Presidency in July.

Frederiksen condemned the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as “absolutely horrific and catastrophic”. She also criticized plans of Israeli politicians for new settlement projects in West Bank.

Denmark wants to “increase pressure on Israel”

“We are one of the countries that want to increase the pressure on Israel, but we have not yet received any support from the EU members,” she added. She wants to consider political pressure and sanctions, “be it against settlers, minister or even Israel as a whole”. “We do not rule out anything in advance. Just like in Russia, we design the sanctions so that they work where, in our opinion, they achieve the greatest effect,” added Frederiksen.

Unlike other countries such as France, Great Britain and Canada, Denmark has not yet announced or promised to recognize a Palestinian state.

Probably more than 60,000 deaths in Gaza

The Hamas and their allies had triggered the war in the Gaza Strip with their brutal major attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. According to Israeli information, more than 1200 people were killed in the attack, 251 people were delayed as hostages in the Gaza Strip.

Almost two years later, Hamas still holds 49 hostages in the Palestinian area. According to the Israeli army, only 22 of them are still alive.

Israel has been massively militarily in the Gaza Strip since the major Hamas attack. According to the Hamas authorities, more than 61,400 people have so far been killed. The information cannot be checked independently, but are classified as realistic by the United Nations.
