WadePhul: Troops in Ukraine would overwhelm us

The debate about possible security guarantees for Ukraine and a role of Germany is picking up speed again. The Foreign Minister sees the question of German soldiers a long way off.

Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul has skeptically commented on a possible sending of German soldiers in Ukraine for western security guarantees against attacks by Russia. This would “probably also overwhelm”, said the CDU politician in the podcast “Table.Today”. He also described this as a “remote question”.

Germany concentrates more than other allies on the NATO territory. “So we are the only European troop device who stationed a strong brigade in Lithuania,” said WadePhul. “Which does not mean that in a different way we can also support Ukraine militarily and technically.”

Before the conversation of the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj with US President Donald Trump in Washington, WadePhul, who had been rejuversed, that only the Ukraine itself could decide whether and under what conditions it would be willing to do without territory. “Of course, she can only accept that if she can be sure on the other side that something like this raid does not happen to her again. And these are security guarantees,” he said.

At the same time, he emphasized that the necessary leadership role in Germany is political. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had managed to bring and combine all Europeans, also gather different interests and nuances behind Ukraine. WadePhul said: “It wasn’t always the case.”
