The debate about possible security guarantees for Ukraine and a role of Germany is picking up speed again. The Foreign Minister sees the question of German soldiers a long way off.
Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul has cautiously expressed a possible sending of German soldiers in Ukraine for western security guarantees against attacks by Russia. In connection with the possible posting of troops as a security guarantee for a peace solution, nothing has yet been discussed with other European countries, WadePhul said to a question during his visit to Tokyo. “We are at the beginning of a difficult process.”
In the “Table.Today” podcast, WadePhul had said that a posting of German soldiers to Ukraine would “probably also overwhelm”. This is a “remote question”.
“That really has to be negotiated”
In Tokyo, WadePhul said to journalists, at the meeting of US President Donald Trump with Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and other European heads of state and government in Washington, the key points of a joint position towards Russia.
He and the Federal Government have repeatedly made it clear that robust security guarantees were needed for Ukraine and that Germany would have to make contributions and take responsibility. It is currently open whether German troops will be sent. “That really has to be negotiated,” added WadePhul.
Don’t you want to miss anything from the star?
Personally, competent and entertaining: Editor -in -chief Gregor Peter Schmitz sends you the most important content from the star-Credaction and arranges what Germany talks about.
In the past, the Bundeswehr has declared that it focuses on setting up a powerful brigade in Lithuania, said WadePhul. “Everything else can only answer the distribution minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) and not me. This is not my job and not my job.”
Wadephul: Not binding from the outset
When talking to Washington in the evening, it is important to “be at the side of Ukraine,” added WadePhul. It is also important that “not legally binding from the outset is not made by Ukraine”. The starting point for possible negotiations must be the current contact line – i.e. the front line. Then you have to negotiate together at eye level.
In conversation with “Table.Today”, WadePhul emphasized that Germany’s political nature was the necessary leadership role. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had managed to bring and combine all Europeans, also gather different interests and nuances behind Ukraine. WadePhul said: “It wasn’t always the case.”
