Trump praises Merz – and admires his tan.
The conversations in the White House are actually about war in Ukraine. That does not keep hosts Trump from jokes. One applies to Chancellor Merz.
Flippant words despite serious occasion: US President Donald Trump admired the public holiday tan of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. “You look great with your complexion,” said the host of the Ukraine summit in the White House (all information in the live blog) in Washington as his German guest.
Where did he get this tan from, Trump wanted to know. He would like to have it too, said the US President.
Merz had interrupted his summer vacation for the trip to Washington and had flown from Munich to the USA.
In the White House, the US President gathered the European state and government head of the EU and NATO at a long rectangular table after a bilateral conversation with the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. In the background there were journalists who could listen to the entrance statements of all participants, which is unusual at the international level.
Trump praises Merz as a “very strong personality”
Merz seems to have a stone in the board at Trump. The US President called the CDU chairman his “friend”, a “very strong personality” and a “very strong leader”.
However, Trump did not go to other interlocutors with compliments. For example, he called the Finnish President Alexander Stubb a “young powerful man”. And Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also received the “really big leader” label.
