Although new Ukraine summits have been announced, open questions are increasing. Including whether the Kremlin is ready for a meeting at all. Meanwhile, a possible place is emerging.
After the announcement of new Ukraine talks, the evidence of a meeting of the President of Ukraine and Russia with Donald Trump in Budapest. The Secret Service, which is responsible for the security of the US President, is already taking precautions for this, reported the website “Politico”. The Hungarian capital was proposed in a conversation of Trump with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the Bloomberg financial service wrote.
According to previous information, the three -way meeting is planned after an encounter by the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. Trump said in a radio interview that he had “very successful” encounters with both – “and now I thought it was better if they met without me”. He wanted to see how the conversation is.
Despite the announcement on Monday that the two meetings are being prepared, there are still many open questions – including whether the Kremlin is ready for this. The White House confirmed that Putin agreed to a summit with Selenskyj, but there was still no clear words from Moscow.
Trump excludes US soldiers for peacekeepers
It is also unclear how specifically the security guarantees for Ukraine could look like. However, it is now clear that there will be no US soldiers in a possible peace force. Trump categorically excluded this. However, the United States could provide support in the air, Trump told the TV station Fox News. He meant this as the “option and possibility”, later the spokeswoman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, clarified.
The White House, meanwhile, confirmed to the TV station Fox News that US general staff Dan Caine will visit his colleagues from Germany, Great Britain, France, Finland and Italy this week. There should be talk about security guarantees and their implementation.
White house: Putin has promised meetings
On the post -hook of reporters, whether Putin has “promised” a direct meeting in the coming weeks, said Leavitt: “He has that.” So far, Moscow has held back. In principle, one is open to every talks, Foreign Minister Sergei Lawrov said on state television. “But all contacts with the participation of the heads of state have to be prepared extremely carefully,” he added. With this argument, Russia had already rejected Selenskyj’s claims after a quick meeting with Putin.
White house says nothing about the place
When asked about a possible place for a meeting of Selenskyj and Putin, Leavitt only said that she did not want to speculate about it. Budapest did not want to confirm or deny her. Putin is said to have proposed in an interview with Trump Moscow – the spokeswoman did not want to comment on the confidentiality of the conversations. Against Putin there is an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court because of the accusation of war crimes, which makes it difficult to search for a place.
Finance Minister Scott Bessent said in a TV interview when asked about Budapest as a place for the three-way summit: “But first we have to come through the bilateral meeting.” With the demand for which of the two meetings, he also gave the impression that they could take place in different locations.
Military expert: Many European soldiers necessary
When asked about the negative attitude of Russia, Leavitt said that Trump talked about Putin and Selenskyj. The US President had previously said that Germany, France and Great Britain were ready to send soldiers to Ukraine to secure a possible peace.
According to the former commander of the US armed forces in Europe, thousands of European soldiers would be necessary to protect Ukraine. Together with the USA, Europeans would have to create security guarantees that exerted real pressure on Moscow, Ben Hodges told the Editorial Network Germany (RND). “Without the posting of many thousands of European soldiers, on site with a clear order, strict task rules and real skills that Russia respects, such guarantees remain an empty sleeve,” he warned.
Trump: “I want to get to heaven”
Meanwhile, the US President spoke of a religious motivation for efforts for a peace solution: “I want to try to get to heaven if that is possible,” he told the TV station Fox News. “I think the President was serious. I think the president wants to come to heaven,” said Leavitt in the White House.
