Ex-US-General Hodges: “Doubt that the United States is really serious about security guarantees”
In the debate about security guarantees for Ukraine The former commander-in-chief of the US armed forces in Europe, Ben Hodges, the sending of numerous western soldiers for necessary. “Without the posting of many thousands of European soldiers, on site with a clear order, strict commands and real skills that Russia respects, such guarantees remain an empty sleeve,” Hodges told the “Editorial Network Germany”.
“One thing is certain: Moscow will put the guarantees to the test”warned Hodges. Only the presence of western soldiers – equipped with air defense, long -distance weapons and artillery – could effectively deter Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, he emphasized. The western soldiers would have to be integrated into the Ukrainian defense structures and equipped with robust operational rules. Russia must know that the soldiers can shoot back if they were provoked with Russian rockets or drones.
However, Putin had made it clear several times that he would never accept Western soldiers on the border, Hodges pointed out. He also has “doubts that the United States is really serious about security guarantees for Ukraine”. So far, US President Donald Trump has not committed himself to anything.
