IS: Charge against 18-year-old because of a planned attack

The Federal Prosecutor has charged charges against a suspected supporter of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS), which is said to have planned an attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin. The 18-year-old Russian citizen was arrested at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport in February.

Emergency services from the federal police and the Brandenburg State Criminal Police Office caught him on the way to boarding on February 20. According to the information, he wanted to go towards Pakistan in order to join IS there and have it trained militarily. Since then he has been in custody.

The State Protection Senate of the Chamber Court in Berlin must decide whether it allows the indictment. He would then also determine appointments for a process.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Communication said: “From the beginning of February 2025, he initially planned to commit an attack in Germany, for example to the Israeli embassy in Berlin.” For this purpose, the accused has taken care of instructions for the production of explosives on the Internet. However, implementing the project failed because the man could not get the necessary components.

In parallel to his stopping ideas, the accused is said to have translated the IS propaganda material into Russian and Chechen.

To finance the trip to Pakistan, he concluded two mobile phone contracts on expensive smartphones, which he had sold profitably, said the federal prosecutor. “Shortly before the start of the trip, he sent a alleged IS member abroad with a video with the loyalty rig on the organization.”

Specifically, the highest indictment in Germany accuses the man when adolescents have supported a terrorist association abroad. In addition, he is said to have guilty, among other things, the attempted membership in a terrorist association abroad, the guidance to inspect a serious act of violence and the preparation of a serious act of violence.

After the arrest, the accused had initially been custody based on an arrest warrant from the Brandenburg District Court. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office later took over the investigation from the Brandenburg General Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect was brought to Karlsruhe in early June, where an investigative judge of the Federal Court of Justice opened up a new arrest warrant.
