The condemnation of Donald Trump Due to business frauds – but not the fine in record height. A court in New York comes to this judgment.
US President Donald Trump has achieved a legal success: A court in New York raised a civilian fine of $ 464 million against him on Thursday. The court called the penance “excessively”, but confirmed the guilty verdict for business fraud. Trump spoke of a “total victory” in the online service Truth. However, the Attorney General Letitia James wants to contest the judgment.
Trump had been found guilty in a civil trial in New York of artificially inflated the assets of his real estate empire for years in order to get favorable conditions from banks and insurance companies. In February 2024, he was therefore sentenced to a fine of around $ 355 million. Together with the incurred interest rates, the punishment was $ 464 million (around 400 million euros).
Trump’s lawyer had argued that the cancellation of the fine served the “overarching well -being” of the country because of his second term. The appeal department of the Supreme New York Court did not follow this. However, she decided that the height of the penance was a violation of the eighth additional article on the US constitution, which prohibits excessive punishments.
