California wants to reorganize its constituencies – and thus reacts to a controversial advance from Texas. That shouldn’t be the end of the nationwide dispute.
In the fight for future majorities in the US Congress, the Democratic Party in California has set the course for a more advantageous cut of the constituencies. It is a reaction to similar republicans in Texas that are promoted by President Donald Trump. In the coming year, five seats previously held by the Democrats should go to the Republicans in the congress elections.
In return, the California Democrats now brought three legislative proposals in an urgent procedure by the Senate and the Chamber of MPs of the state. This is to comply with a deadline on Friday in order to get the newly tailored districts in good time for a special vote on November 4 on the ballot papers.
Texas votes for the Republicans and California for the Democrats. But the voters of the two parties are unevenly distributed in the states. Therefore, there can be shifts through a new cut of the electoral districts.
Victory for California governor Gavin Newsom
The rapid adoption of the legislation is a crucial victory for the California governor Gavin Newsom. He leads the resistance to the attempt that the Democrats denounced nationwide as a grip for power by Trump in the Republican Texas.
The Democrats describe their deviations from the usual independent and non-partisan reorganization process in California as a temporary “emergency” strategy. In their opinion, they want to combat extreme republican steps to manipulate the system. “The cards are crazy against us, so we have to defend ourselves,” said California Senator Lena Gonzalez, a co -author of the plan.
The Republicans, including Trump, have openly admitted that the new regulations in Texas are about strengthening their political influence. This is to secure the narrow majority of the party in the US representative house in the intermediate elections in November 2026. The Republicans have a majority of only three seats there.
Experience has shown that the President’s party loses seats in the House of Representatives in the congress elections. In addition, the approval values for Trump have dropped since he took office in January. The Democrats therefore have hopes to conquer the majority in the House of Representatives in the election. The 435 seats there are available every two years.
The United States discuss Texas
The reorganization of the constituencies in Texas has triggered a nationwide dispute. Governors of both parties have already threatened to initiate similar steps in other states. Republican states such as Ohio and Florida as well as democratically controlled states such as Maryland and Illinois are already considering this.
