According to its own statements, the US government collects “more information than ever before” about people who enter the USA. Social networks are also examined. Experts warn of discrimination.
The US government is taking a close look at millions of visas that have already been granted. To this end, all available information would be used after the visa allocation – including activities in social networks, the “Washington Post” reported, citing a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Around 55 million people are affected.
With a “continuous review”, Visa should be able to be withdrawn, for example, if there are indications of an exceeding of the length of stay or to criminal activities. It was a “significant expansion” of the previous measures, wrote the “Washington Post”. A high -ranking employee of the State Ministry of the newspaper confirmed that “more information than ever” would be collected. It is unclear how exactly the time -consuming and logistically complex review is realized.
Experts warn of discrimination
It was not new that Visa would be checked again when contacting the law enforcement authorities, the “Washington Post” wrote. The announcement of the Foreign Ministry now sounds that “Visa could not be revoked due to behavior but from statements”, said migration expert David J. Bier from the Cato Institute think tank. Exams could “take place in a discriminatory manner,” he warned, and directed against “immigrants with certain backgrounds”, for the expulsion of which you are looking for an excuse.
US President Donald Trump wants to take rigorous action against immigrants who come to the country illegally or are already in the United States without a valid residence status. But also people who enter the USA with a valid visa are examined more. Finally, the U.S. Authority for Immigration and Naturalization Usci announced that immigrants will in future check possible “anti-American” statements on the Internet. Visa for tourists or students should also be increasingly checked.
