Moscow sees conditions for the summit as not fulfilled
US President Trump wishes to meet Putin and Selenskyj. However, Russia represents conditions – which seem to be unfulfilled for Ukraine.
An early summit by Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj is unrealistic for Russia. “Putin is ready to meet Selenskyj when a agenda is prepared for the summit, and this agenda is not finished at all,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrow to the US TV station NBC.
US President Donald Trump had spoken out for such a meeting on the end of the Russian war of attack in Ukraine. So far, Moscow had evaded.
Lavrow now said that the points that should be clarified before such a meeting were said to be regeneration and a Ukrainian waiver of membership in the western military alliance. “Selenskyj said no to everything,” said Lawrow.
Russia has almost completely taken the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk in the course of the invasion of the invasion three and a half years ago and partially took the Donetsk, Saporischschja and Cherson areas claimed by the Kremlin. Meanwhile, NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte praised Trump on a visit to Kiev on Friday. Trump brought movement into the negotiations. But he “also made it clear that the USA will be involved in the granting of security guarantees for Ukraine,” said Rutte. He described the guarantees as an important factor for permanent peace in Ukraine.
