The relationship between southern and North Korea is already extremely tense. Now an incident on the common border causes new mood.
According to UN, a few days ago, around 30 North Korean soldiers briefly exceeded the upgraded border with South Korea and thus triggered warning shots of the military there. The South Korean news agency Yonhap reports. She referred to a spokesman for the UN Command (UNC) in Korea led by the USA.
Warnings and warning shots
The South Korean armed forces had informed the North Korean soldiers with several warning expressions that they had exceeded the military demarcation line, but they did not react, said the spokesman according to Yonhap. Then the South Koreans would have given warning shots to force the North Koreans to repent.
The deputy chief of staff of the Korean People’s Army, Ko Jong Chol, said, according to the state news agency KCNA, of “dangerous provocations” that could trigger a military conflict and would have to be stopped immediately. The North Korean soldiers had carried out work on the border.
UN command should secure ceasefire agreements
From a formal point of view, North and South Korea are still in a state of war, since the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 only ended with an armistice, but a peace treaty was never signed. The UNC, founded in 1950, is primarily intended to ensure that the ceasefire agreement from 1953 is complied with. The tensions between the democratic South Korea and the Communist North Korea increased significantly over the past few years.
