Markus Söder wants to make Stephan Mayer CSU general secretary

The CSU is gearing up for the 2023 state elections: party leader Markus Söder wants to propose Stephan Mayer as the new general secretary. He also wants to reorganize the cabinet.

Markus Söder wants to make the CSU fit for the state elections in autumn 2023 and is therefore making changes at the top of the party and in the Bavarian state cabinet. Stephan Mayer, a member of the Bundestag and former State Secretary for the Interior, is planned as the new Secretary General of the CSU. Party leader Markus Söder will propose the personnel to the board, as he said in Munich on Wednesday. Mayer should therefore follow Markus Blume, who is moving to the Bavarian cabinet as a minister. District Administrator Christian Bernreiter and former Environment Minister Ulrike Scharf are also moving up into the state government.

Söder said that the reorganization should give the whole party and also the state government a new boost after the pandemic. Because the state election in autumn 2023 is a fateful election for the CSU. In the polls, the CSU is around 35 to 36 percent and thus still behind the poor result of the 2018 election. Söder himself had repeatedly stated that he would no longer reach the absolute majority that the CSU had always aimed for and would continue the coalition with the Free Voters is the goal.

New Ministers for the Cabinet

Previously, Söder had presented his plans in the crucial session of the CSU parliamentary group in the utmost secrecy with a cell phone ban. At noon, Söder wanted to present his new ministers to the state parliament and have them appointed there.

In CSU circles, construction and transport minister Kerstin Schreyer, science minister Bernd Sibler, family minister Carolina Trautner and Europe minister Melanie Huml have been named as unstable candidates for weeks. Interior Secretary Gerhard Eck is now also losing cabinet posts. He had already announced that he no longer wanted to run in the state elections.
