“Last generation”: climate protectors protest at three airports

Despite harsh criticism of their blockades, the climate activists of the «last generation» continue their protests. There are actions in Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin.

At the airports in Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin, climate activists from the “Last Generation” initiative protested against food waste and for a more consistent climate policy.

The Greens member of the Bundestag and former Minister for the Environment, Jürgen Trittin, expressed understanding for the demonstrators and also for their freeway blockades in recent weeks. “Some claim to practice civil disobedience – that doesn’t make them violent,” he told Die Zeit.

Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) jumps with his criticism “too short”, explained Trittin. “We need movements that bring such general human interests to the streets and articulate them.” Buschmann had criticized the activists on Twitter. «Unannounced demonstrations on the Autobahn are and will remain illegal. Protest is ok, but only within the framework of the law and the constitution,” he wrote on Twitter.

– Munich: In the Bavarian state capital, eight activists stuck themselves on the street and blocked access roads to the freight area in two places, as a reporter from the German Press Agency observed. However, the traffic obstructions were limited: According to the police, both blockades were relatively easy to drive around. They were resolved with the help of ambulance and fire services by around 9:30 a.m. The activists were taken to the station. Investigations are being instituted against them for coercion.

– Frankfurt: Six activists blocked an access road to the cargo area in the Hessian city. They held up banners that read “Save Food, Save Lives”. According to the activists, another protest action was prevented by the police. A police spokesman said there were other actions around Frankfurt Airport, for example on the feeder roads and intersections. “This causes traffic delays.”

– Berlin: A road blockade by some climate protection demonstrators at the airport in the capital had no major impact. Four men and women stuck themselves on an access road early in the morning, a police spokesman said. The blockade ultimately failed because the traffic was diverted by the police. The demonstrators were relieved from the street in the morning.
