Merz emphasizes: No recognition of a Palestinian state

Canada wants to recognize a state of Palestine in autumn – Germany will not do that. This is confirmed by Chancellor Merz after a conversation with his Canadian colleague Carney in Berlin.

In contrast to other countries such as Canada or France, Germany will not be recognized by Palestine’s own state for the time being. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) made it clear again after a meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. “We will not agree with this initiative,” said Merz in a joint press conference with Carney. “We currently do not see the prerequisites for state recognition as fulfilled.”

Germany considers recognition of a Palestinian state as one of the last points on the way to a two-state solution in which Israelis and Palestinians can live peacefully side by side. In contrast, Carney announced at the end of July that his country would recognize Palestine as a state at the UN General Assembly in September. France’s President Emmanuel Macron also plans this. Carney justified this with the fact that the prospects for a two-state solution would be worse and worse.

Merz, on the other hand, now emphasized that Germany will not follow this step in the United Nations General Assembly. Even the latest events in the Gaza Strip did not change that. Most recently, an Israeli attack on the Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza Strip, in which 19 people were killed, had caused a sensation and criticism internationally. There were also five journalists among the dead.
