Cabinet: Bavaria: Mayer is to become the new CSU general secretary

The time of speculation is over: In order to be able to pass the state elections, CSU boss Söder is rebuilding his government and filling a top position at the CSU. Because: In autumn 2023 he has to deliver.

Member of the Bundestag and former State Secretary for the Interior, Stephan Mayer, is to become the new CSU Secretary General. Party leader Markus Söder will propose this to the board, as he said in Munich on Wednesday.

Mayer should therefore follow Markus Blume, who is moving to the Bavarian cabinet as a minister. District Administrator Christian Bernreiter and former Environment Minister Ulrike Scharf are also moving up into the state government.

Hope for a new boost

Minister of Science Bernd Sibler, Minister of Construction Kerstin Schreyer and Minister of Social Affairs Carolina Trautner have to give way – just like Secretary of State Gerhard Eck, who is being replaced by Sandro Kirchner. Eck had already announced that he no longer wanted to run in the state elections.

Söder said that the reorganization should give the whole party and also the state government a new boost after the pandemic. Because the state election in autumn 2023 is a fateful election for the CSU. In the polls, the CSU is around 35 to 36 percent and thus still behind the poor result of the 2018 election. Söder himself had repeatedly stated that he would no longer reach the absolute majority that the CSU had always aimed for and would continue the coalition with the Free Voters is the goal.

Important switching point

The position of Secretary-General is considered to be the key interface for the preparation of the election campaign. The former Secretary of State for the Interior, Mayer, who is also strongly committed to the concerns of displaced persons, is more likely to be attributed to the conservative wing of the CSU.

Mayer was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior under Horst Seehofer. A few months ago he was elected Vice-President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), but was unable to take office because he left the federal government not long enough ago.

In addition to his experience from 20 years in the Bundestag, Söder appreciates Mayer’s skill in dealing with the media and his appearances on talk shows. He should be the face of the party alongside the party leader. The unmarried fully qualified lawyer Mayer has a classic CSU party career behind him – from the Junge Union to the highest offices.
