BSW chairwoman Sahra Wagenknecht sees a preliminary stage of conscription in the draft of the military service law – And warns of the Bundeswehr in Ukraine.
The BSW wants to use the planned reform of the military service to mobilize its own supporters before the state elections in the coming year. “This law is the red carpet for returning to compulsory military service,” said party leader Sahra Wagenknecht the star. The reform is “the next big step towards militarization in Germany”.
The compulsory military service has been suspended since 2011. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD), who is to be adopted by the cabinet this Wednesday, has so far released voluntariness and financial incentives. The model is Sweden.
“Mobilization against compulsory military service becomes a focus of the BSW, in particular our youth association,” announced Wagenknecht. The law is “a serious mistake” and “an attack on the young population”, which speaks with a clear majority against the reintroduction of conscription: “Young people should defend themselves against this deprivation of freedom for the war.”
Return to compulsory military service is prepared in parallel
According to Pistorius’ plans, young people over 18 are to be contacted by the Bundeswehr from next year. Men would then have to comment on their suitability and interest in the service, from 2028 they would be loaded in addition to patterns. Women can participate voluntarily.
The Bundeswehr needs about 80,000 additional active soldiers to achieve NATO’s target of 260,000. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had emphasizedthat in parallel a return to Compulsory military service If the target strength is not achieved on the basis of voluntariness.
With regard to the currently debated posting of troops to Ukraine to secure a possible peace agreement, Wagenknecht said: “The conscripts of tomorrow could be the Bundeswehr soldiers from the day after tomorrow, which may then be sent to Ukraine.” For this reason, too, the reform must be prevented: “The BSW will decisively combat conscription. “
