An entire legislative package for security and better defense comes on the table: the federal government meets the Ministry of Defense and advises central questions.

With a cabinet meeting in the Ministry of Defense, the Federal Government wants to set the course for a new military service and advise on the security situation in Europe. For this purpose, the ministerial round will meet in a listening room in the Bendler block on Wednesday.

The new commander-in-chief of NATO troops in Europe (Sacur), Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich, takes part as a guest. The American and inspector Carsten Breuer will report on the situation, as government spokesman Stefan Kornelius announced.

According to the ministry, it has been more than three decades since the weekly cabinet met in the Ministry of Defense. This was last done in February 1992 under Chancellor Helmut Kohl (CDU).

The Ministry of Defense said the meeting was now an important sign. The cabinet also wants to decide important legislative proposals for further strengthening the Bundeswehr. Specifically, it is about several points.

The Bundeswehr must grow up vigorously for the new NATO goals and in response to the threat of Russia in the standing group and the reserve. A new and attractive military service, which initially relies on voluntariness, is said to be a central component for more staff. An important step should be the reintroduction of the military recording, for which young men have to provide information that young women can do this. That wasn’t enough for the Union. Dispute over the last few meters could be settled in the coalition.

National Security Council (NSR)

Union and SPD have already decided in the coalition agreement such a central switching point in the Chancellery. Now the rules of procedure of the new committee are to be decided by the cabinet. The Security Council should be able to bring about days and quick decisions, but also develop strategies for threats and tackle safety. The Federal Chancellor, currently Friedrich Merz (CDU).

Military shielding service (MAD)

The ministers have the draft law to strengthen military security in the Bundeswehr with three essential points. It introduces new powers so that the MAD can “perform its tasks effectively and reliably”, even for troops abroad. In addition, the setting check for soldiers is regulated. Military policemen (“field hunters”) and civilian guards also receive new powers to strengthen military security, even when checking suspicious people.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

In the middle of ongoing peace efforts, there is a political debate up to the question of whether Germany should provide soldiers for a peace -assured group in Ukraine. The ministerial round is brought up to date without resolutions possible. The Vice Chancellor, Federal Minister of Finance and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil can report from his discussions held in Kiev at the beginning of the week.

The cabinet members are informed first -hand from the general inspector – Germany’s highest ranking soldier – and the “Sacur” Lieutenant Grynkewich. Breuer can also report on the ongoing consultations of the military about security guarantees. Grynkewich can respond to the status of NATO defense planning. Because Germany’s military contributions to security guarantees for Ukraine can also mean that these skills are not available to the alliance as planned.
