Is the state of the state unable to react to certain challenges? Italy’s rights head Giorgia Meloni has a clear opinion.
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has sharply billed with the European Union. The EU is “increasingly condemned to geopolitical insignificance,” said the chairwoman of the right -wing government party Fratelli d’Italia (brothers of Italy) in Rimini. The state of the state, to which Italy itself belongs, is “unable to react effectively to the challenges of competitiveness by China and the USA”.
Meloni reminded of the statements of her non-party predecessor and former ECB president Mario Draghi. In Rimini, he had also warned of the geopolitical and economic weakness in Rimini. She had long predicted this development, Meloni said in her 40-minute speech. The foundation on which the EU and the democracies were built are questioned by “cynical autocraties”. The Union must be able to rediscover its soul and roots, said the right head of government.
Meloni has been head of a legal coalition in Italy since October 2022. Already in the election campaign she performed with EU-skeptical positions, but has shown herself to be more moderate as head of government.
