The North Stream pipelines under the Baltic Sea had been built to transport Russian gas to Germany. In September 2022, they were badly damaged by explosive devices. The lines were not in operation at the time. Russia had stopped gas deliveries via Nord Stream 1 shortly before – presumably in response to the western sanctions in view of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Nord Stream 2 never went into operation.
In October 2022, the federal prosecutor took over the investigation into the sabotage campaign. As she announced when K. was arrested, the command placed explosive devices near the Danish island of Bornholm at the lines. The command used a sailing yacht for the transport that started from Rostock.
