Today, people are an average of two years older when pension entry than at the turn of the millennium. The number of recipients increases. The annual report of the pension insurance provides current data.
In Germany, people retire on average at the age of 64.7. The average so -called retirement age continued to increase last year, as can be seen from the annual report of the German Pension Insurance for 2024.
An important reason is the gradual increase in the age limit for pension to 67 to 2031. For comparison: In 2000, the average age when retirement was still 62.3 years.
In view of the demographic development in the country, an increase in the age limit is always discussed to 70 years. The Union and SPD coalition agreement states, however, that there should be no further increase in the statutory retirement age.
Instead, an “active pension” is planned: Anyone who continues to work after reaching the statutory retirement age should get up to 2,000 euros of their salary per month. A commission from 2026 will develop proposals for more fundamental reforms on how the pension system is to be paid in the long run.

The pension insurance itself currently rates its financial situation as solid. “Thanks to the relatively good situation on the labor market in social insured employment and positive wage development, the financial situation remains stable,” said Anja Piel, one of the two CEO of the German Pension Insurance.
An average of 1,154 euros pension
The annual report of the pension insurance contains further figures: On average, old -age pensioners received a pension of 1,154 euros per month last year (2023: 1,102 euros) – men received an average of 1,405 euros and women 955 euros.
The pension insurance spent around 402.8 billion euros in 2024 (2023: 380), with income of around 402 billion (2023: a good 381). About every fourth in the country is a pensioner. According to the date, the information was 21.4 million – around 200,000 more than in the previous year.
