NRW is a special path for crime statistics: the police will in future record and identify all nationalities of suspects.
In the North Rhine-Westphalian crime statistics, multiple state members of suspects and victims are to be shown in the future. The NRW Ministry of the Interior announced this.
“If you want to see reality, you also have to measure it. That is why we will have to take multiple members into account in crime statistics in the future,” said NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) of the “Rheinische Post”.
In addition, several nationalities with regard to reasons for detention could be indications of a possible risk of escape and for escape opportunities.
By German suspects in NRW every sixth with a second nationality
A corresponding decree provides the changed recording retrospectively from July 1st. However, only a nationality will continue to be transmitted to the Federal Criminal Police Office in accordance with nationwide guidelines.
An evaluation showed that every sixth suspect with German citizenship in 2024 had a second citizen.
The most common five double state members in the German suspects in 2024 in NRW were: German/Turkish (10:307), German/Polish (6652), German/Russian (3484), German/Moroccan (3125) and German/Syrian (2185).
So far, German suspects, who also had a Turkish or Greek passport, were only managed as German suspects.
