Markus Söder and the CSU insist on the general conscription. The Merz cabinet has decided against it. That is why the Bavarian Prime Minister is now becoming clear.
CSU boss Markus Söder considers the Federal Government’s decisions to be inadequate as a newly designed military service-he continues to demand a general compulsory conscription. “The decision is now an introduction-but of course that’s not enough, because Putin will not be put off by a questionnaire army,” said the Bavarian Prime Minister of the “Augsburg Allgemeine”.
Söder referred to the Russian threat situation for the NATO countries and said: “That’s why we shouldn’t wait a day: we need a real military service.”
“According to military experts, Putin could be willing between 2027 and 2029 to challenge NATO,” warned Söder and demanded: “We have to strengthen our Bundeswehr massively, this is the only way we can defend our freedom.” This needs money and more soldiers.
Markus Söders CSU “doesn’t want to let go”
The federal government’s draft law decided by the cabinet remains behind many expectations. “Therefore clip and clear: this is a step in the right direction, but it takes more.” The CSU won’t let up. “The soldiers see it similarly as we do.”
The Federal Cabinet had launched the law to introduce a new military service on Wednesday. At a meeting in the Ministry of Defense, the ministerial group approved the legal framework that introduces a military recording of young men, but initially relies on voluntariness and more attractive service. A return to compulsory military service, as the Union politicians in particular had repeatedly demanded, was not agreed.

Australia
Australia abolished compulsory military service in 1972. Instead, there is a voluntary military service for men and women. A special feature is the recruitment of foreigners by the Australian Defense Forces (ADF). For example, New Zealanders, Canadians, British and Americans who have been living in Australia for at least a year can join the ADF. Women have been serving in all areas since 2013, also in combat units. In 2024 they provided just over 20 percent of the armed forces

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), according to his own statement, assumes that with the newly designed military service, enough young people can be won for a service for the Bundeswehr. “In any case, from today’s perspective, I am confident that we will initially reach the numbers we need,” said the CDU politician in Berlin on Wednesday.
