Accordingly, two other journalists were shot. The Caribbean state’s interim prime minister, Ariel Henry, wrote on Twitter that he regretted the journalist’s death and condemned the violence that caused injuries.
Men shoot from patrol cars
Several media reports blamed the police for the shooting. According to the newspaper “Le Nouvelliste”, heavily armed and hooded men fired into the crowd from a car. The news agency RHI News reported that it was a patrol car. The police had reportedly used tear gas against the demonstrators.
Hundreds of people took part in the demonstration, where workers demanded a minimum wage of 1,500 gourde (about 13 euros) a day. On Monday, the government announced an increase in the daily minimum wage in the textile industry from 500 to 685 gourdes after weeks of protests.
