Israel calls on the civilian population of the city of Gaza to move south. The UN chief fears an expansion of the humanitarian catastrophe if hundreds of thousands should be forced.
UN General Secretary António Guterres calls on Israel to forego the announced intake of the city of Gaza in the north of the sealed coastal strip. “Hundreds of thousands of civilians would be forced to flee again and families would be even more dangerous. That has to stop. There is no military solution for this conflict,” wrote Guterres in the evening on the online platform X. The civilian population in Gaza sees itself exposed to a “further fatal escalation”. The announcement of Israel to occupy the city of Gaza is ringing in a new and dangerous phase.
Israel’s government is planning to take the city of Gaza, in which around one million people are supposed to be. These are to be accommodated in tent camps in the south. On Wednesday, a military spokesman had announced that preparations for the planned reconciliation of the residents were. Prevention had already been made for the facility for humanitarian aid centers and tents were delivered. Aid organizations repeatedly criticize the catastrophic conditions in the south of the coastal area.
Gutres: Gaza is littered with ruins and corpses
Guterres continued to write that the extent of death and destruction in Gaza was unprecedented in recent history. “Gaza is littered with ruins, corpses and examples of possible serious violations of international law. We need an immediate and permanent ceasefire.” The hostages would have to be released immediately, and the cruel treatment they had to endure must stop.
Israel has clear obligations as a occupying power. “It must ensure the supply of food, water, medication and other vital goods.” In addition, Israel has to agree to and enable them to have a much better access to humanitarian aid, said the UN boss.
Israel always rejects such statements and allegations. The country, in turn, accuses the UN of not distributing aid deliveries available in the Gaza Strip.
Israel is under considerable international pressure to relieve the suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Reports about malnourished children triggered outrage worldwide and contributed to the fact that countries such as France, Canada and Australia announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state. Germany stopped part of weapon exports to Israel after Israel had declared that the Gaza War would expand.
